Thailand Retirement Visa in 2026: Tighter Health Insurance Checks and What to Prepare

Immigration offices across Thailand are applying health insurance requirements more strictly in 2026. Here is what has changed, what to watch for at renewal, and how to stay compliant.

Thailand’s retirement visa remains one of the most accessible long-stay options for foreigners aged 50 and over, but the renewal process has become noticeably more rigorous over the past year. Immigration offices around the country are applying the health insurance requirement more consistently, and several retirees who thought they were compliant have faced problems at renewal. Here is what you need to know in 2026.

The Health Insurance Situation

Health insurance has been a formal requirement for the retirement visa since 2019, but enforcement varied significantly by province and individual officer. In 2026, that inconsistency has largely disappeared. The majority of immigration offices now check the policy document at every renewal, not just at first application.

What they are checking:

Coverage amounts. The policy must clearly show at least 40,000 THB per year for outpatient treatment and 400,000 THB per year for inpatient treatment. Policies that bundle these into a single annual figure without separating the two types are being questioned at several offices.

Policy expiry. Your insurance must be valid at the time of renewal and must not expire before your new visa period ends. Officers have started rejecting applications where the policy expires mid-year even if it currently covers the renewal date.

Approved insurers. Thai immigration maintains a list of approved insurance companies. If your insurer is not on the list, you need a formal letter from the company confirming the coverage meets the minimum requirements. Some international policies that were previously accepted without question are now being scrutinised more carefully.

Financial Requirements: No Change

The financial thresholds have not changed in 2026. You still need one of the following:

The seasoning requirement for the bank deposit method remains three months for a new application. For renewals, immigration checks that the balance has been maintained above 800,000 THB for most of the year, not just at renewal time. A bank letter showing the account history for the past 12 months is the standard document.

90-Day Reporting in 2026

The online 90-day reporting system has improved but remains unreliable in some provinces. Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Bangkok’s main offices all accept online filings with reasonable consistency. Smaller provincial offices often still require an in-person visit.

The fine for missing a 90-day report remains 2,000 THB per instance. If you are outside Thailand when your report is due, you are exempt for that period and the clock resets from your re-entry date.

Visa Siam handles 90-day reporting on behalf of clients throughout Thailand.

What the Renewal Visit Looks Like Now

A typical renewal at a main immigration office in 2026 requires:

  1. TM7 application form (completed in advance)
  2. Passport with current visa
  3. TM30 address notification (must be current, filed within the past 30 days at most offices)
  4. Bank letter and bank book showing 800,000 THB balance
  5. Health insurance certificate showing coverage amounts and validity dates
  6. Two passport photos (4x6 cm, white background)
  7. 1,900 THB fee

Some offices ask for a lease agreement or utility bill to confirm your address. Bringing these as backup avoids a wasted trip.

Tips for a Smooth 2026 Renewal

Book early. Offices in popular expat areas are busy. Chiang Mai and Phuket in particular have long queues during peak season.

Check your insurance well in advance. Give yourself at least 30 days before renewal to confirm your policy is still on the approved list and meets the current requirements.

Keep your TM30 current. If you have moved, or if your landlord has not filed a TM30 for you, get this done before your renewal visit. An outdated TM30 is one of the more common causes of same-day rejections.
